Sanchayapatra (সঞ্চয়পত্র) is one of the safest ways to earn a return in Bangladesh — but the source tax (উৎসে কর) on your profit is widely misunderstood. Here's how it actually works.
The rule is flat, not tiered
The source tax is a flat percentage of your profit, decided by how much you have invested in savings certificates:
- Total investment ৳5,00,000 or less → 5% on profit
- Total investment above ৳5,00,000 → 10% on profit
That's it. There is no "5% on the first 5 lakh of profit and 10% on the rest." The threshold is on your investment, not your profit, and your whole profit is taxed at a single rate.
The threshold counts all your certificates
The ৳5 lakh limit is across every savings certificate you hold — not per certificate. If you buy ৳4 lakh of one type and ৳3 lakh of another, your total is ৳7 lakh, so the 10% rate applies.
Pensioner Sanchayapatra
Pensioner Sanchayapatra is generally exempt from source tax (subject to conditions). Confirm your eligibility with the National Savings Bureau or your bank.
Try it yourself
Use the Sanchayapatra Calculator to see the profit and source tax for each certificate type, including the monthly and quarterly payout schedules.
This is general guidance, not tax advice. Rates and rules change via the Finance Act and NBR circulars — always verify the current figures before investing.
